Beginning my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey

Finally pulled the trigger and went to my first class Monday. I have no training that could be considered any real experience here so this isn’t huge learning curve for me. I was absolutely floored at how poor my cardio was and how much cardio really is used when rolling. By the end of class and a day of hunting as well I had burned somewhere over 6k calories in the day.

I’m really looking forward to seeing my progression in the cardio department as the realization that I struggled to roll for four five minute rounds was more of a gut check than being choked and tapped repeatedly during them 🤣

I agree with you, cardio is the great equalizer. I can do weight training for an hour. 30 minutes of mowing the lawn wears me out. It's time to utilize the StairMaster

When my old gym moved into a room in a commercial gym we’d try to get body builders in to beat on. So many would only come once. One guy did a week and stopped. He told me he was loosing too much weight. I told him it was just water but he didn’t care.

A 100 years ago, I became interested in (real) wrestling, I can relate to the exhaustion. Before too long I quit because it was too hard for me. lol!

Thanks, TenMan

Coming up on my third class tomorrow. The last one according to my fitbit, I burned around 2500 cals in the hour and a half.

Getting really into the whole swing of things, cardio is finally coming up and as soon as I’m not beat sore from getting smashed on every class I’d like to throw some strength training back into my week. What are some areas I could be focusing on when I’m feeling ready that will really transfer over? I just don’t have the strength to match the bigger, stronger opponents at my height currently and think a little more of it will up my odds of survival even if minuscule.

Work on your technique that's much more important than strength

Obviously but there is absolutely something to be said for strength in this sport. As in I am seeing less technical guys get the better of me from sheer strength alone. I mean there is a reason steroids are so prominent in this sport. It's say taking two identically trained and skilled practitioners being 30lbs different than each other...who's going to win the majority of time? Obviously the stronger guy. That is the reason we have weight classes in tournaments as well as age classes...If skill really dictated all then we would all compete open but we don't.

Proper technique is what will display the strength you already have, and strength is what makes technique more effective. The two do not counter each other, instead they complement each

So what you're saying is you have zero insight on what areas to focus on with strength (like legs, back, shoulders ect) and would rather continue to ignore the question I asked so you can preach "technique" when it's been shown time and time again to go hand in hand. You see in training I'm being made to roll with guys 30lbs heavier than me and all muscle. They have the same technical skill I have but are just stronger and power their way past my guard as well as rip arms from collar grabs ect. I suppose you have nothing better to tell me, since what I already am doing is exactly that focusing on my technique. Your answer isn't some Miyagi epiphany and is just hands down classless now. If you want to give me some places to focus my strength based off experience I'd welcome it but you clearly are showing you have none here. Thanks for stopping by to give your well I'd call it two cents but it's not even worth that.

There it is 👍 knew you were after something. Had no valid input for the question asked then gets defensive when told your opinion is horse shit. You’re as predictable as my morning shit.

I'm not looking for anything from your soft ass. If anything I'm one of the few guys that have stuck up for you with your stupid comments for the last few years. As long as you been on here and on gear and you're still getting tossed around like a ragdoll in a Ju Jitsu gym means either your technique is pathetic or you're just a plain weakling with fake gear or combination of both. I suspect both. Get your faggot ass in the gym and work on all of your body parts with conventional weight training . Do you think Gordon Ryan or the Gracies have some special magical exercises they do? Better yet order Billy Blank Taebo that seems more your speed

I wasn’t asking for magical exercises numb nuts, I asked for areas of focus genius. Your insults are about as generic as your responses. I don’t care if you’ve “been sticking up for me”. You mean about as much to me as a tissue I’ve used to catch cum in bud. If my gears fake then maybe we should be discussing the sponsors here 🤣 fucking waste of space and time you are. For someone who brings up Gordon Ryan you sure are playing stupid if you don’t think he hasn’t and doesn’t focus his strength training for jiu jitsu specifically. He’s not trying to get big he’s focusing on areas that strength plays a role in his skills. For someone who seems to think he knows what he’s talking about you sure have your head pretty far up your ass. I’m pretty confident from your blatant homophobia in every response you’ve ever made you might be closeted 😂 it’s no biggie bud come on out one is going to judge you

*Edit* for your ignorant ass turns out he does something that more resembles a body building workout, imagine that shit 🤦‍♂️ I should have known asking a bunch of aged out bros for help was going to result in a insult pissing contest

Jesus. That was a ridiculous exchange. I'm a 4 stripe purple belt. Here u go friend. Work on grip strength. That's number 1 gi or no gi doesn't matter. Grips are #1 . Second work on mobility and core. Work on rotational strength and well.

Beyond that you can do all your bro lifts. Bc let's face it we all wanna look good naked. But if you want increase bjj strength start with ur grip strength. Also work on muscle stamina. That means long slow reps with weights, albeit light weights. Meaning your sets should take u no less than a minute. Try and increase to 90 second sets. If you've ever tried to hold a position for extended time you'll realize what im talking about.

Fucking thank you!!! As well as respect to your skill level man, I know it takes real dedication to move up in this sport.
