Well this is the worst pain I have ever been in from deadlifting. I was going for a new PR of 775 lb. deadlift yesterday got it all the way up expect for the last inch at the top we have all been there started shaking badly but keep trying to lock my shoulders out then my hands gave out and dropped the weight. I got up today and in the middle of my spinal cord it hurts so bad it takes my breathe and about every 20 mins. Or so my left arm goes completely num.I been pow lifting for many years now I am 42 and been doing this crap since I was 13. What scares me is I always had pains here and there hell we all expect that from battling iron but man I cant lay down sit up move my shoulders left or right. I think I may have moved a nerve inside a disc or something going to the doc Monday I just hope it isnt something that will set me back a couple months have a couple tournaments coming up and have worked my ass off to place well. Sorry for the long post just wanted to get it off my chest. Has anyone else went through what I am talking about.

I hurt my lower back 2 weeks ago doing stiff leg deads. Got almost to the top and felt like lighting shot down my lower back and out my ass.......I'm not a power lifter. My doc said it sounded like I blew a disc out......luckily I didn't. Sounds like you should go to a good sports med doc and have this looked at.BTW I'm 41

Advice For Bad Back

Sorry To Hear About Your Injury.i Have Been Through My Share Of Serious Injuries.best Bet Right Now Is To Ice The Area For 20 Minutes Then Remove And Ice Again An Hour Later.you Can Repeat This A Couple Of Times A Day.using An Anti-inflammatory Like Advil Or Motrin Works Well Until You Can See Your Orthopedic Who Can Give You Something Stronger To Break The Pain Spasm.he Will Probably Give You An Anti-inflammatory And Muscle Relaxer Like Soma.he Will Probably Take An X-ray And Might Order An Mri.if Everything Looks Good On The X-ray And Mri I Would Suggest For You To Seek Out A Competent Sports Chiro Who Specializes In Art Work, which Means Active Release Technique.i Would Also Get A Good Sports Massage To Loosen The Hypertonic Muscles And Slowly Increase Your Range Of Motion.when You Get The Go Ahead To Start Training Again Ease Back Slowly Working Around The Injury Putting Some Blood Back In To The Area.sometimes We Have To Take A Few Steps Back Before We Can Forge Ahead Again.main Thing Is Listen To Your Body And Be Patient.when Handling Those Poundages The Injuries Are Always Magnified.stay Focused And Be Positive And You Will Be Back!just Be Patient.my Traing Partner And Myself Are Both Handling Similar Poundages And We Know First Hand What Your Going Through.if You Need Any More Advice We Would Both Be Glad To Help!

i feel your pain.

i was rear ended by a mack truck in 2001. herniated disk, only a soft tissue injury so they thought i got away w/ it pretty good.

i've wrenched my back many times since that injury w/ deads and squats. i decided about a year ago i can't do either movement anymore.

my back feels great. might be time to go back. :D

you did the right thing by going to the doc. that's all you can do. good luck.

Well thanks for all the responses bros. I went to a deep muscle massages therapist today and he did wonders for my back. Said I had compressed vertebras and did his magic for about 25 min. once I thought I was going to startt crying LOL but it did hurt like hell. After he was done I swear I could fell fluid flow right out of my spinal cord for 15 min or so and the more it flowed out the better I felt. As far as the numbness in my left arm he said it was an old injure my brachii’s has been pulled away from the bone around a ½ inch. I was a world arm wrestling champ back in 2002 and have had several injures to it during that time he said that while I was dead lifting I more than likely tried to curl the weight up at that inch and that did the trick. It will just take time to heal period. During this time I had a lot of friends and coaches ask me why I go at it so hard at my age.Well there really isn’t an answer for them if they don’t know it. I am a high school football asst. coach head pow lifting coach have 2 great girls 10 & 13 who play baseball., volleyball, basketball and track. I had many injures do to my actives a titanium rod put in my right foot from where it broke doing squats, right rotor cuff surgery from arm wrestling, bottom line its hard to tell them the feeling you get when your walking on stage or to the podium knowing you worked your ass off and all the past months of training is for those few seconds. I know I am getting older but at what does one give up???? I myself I hope never!!!!! Maybe I am just posting here hoping some understand just getting flak from all people around me right now and sometimes a person needs to hear there are other’s out there like him.......

My Brother,
I'm a few years older than you. I competed in Power for almost twenty years.
MANY injuries!
Had a simular one only about 4-5 months ago.
My chiropractor said I pinched a nerve real bad. Worst pain of my life. I hurt more than the time I drove my scooter into the back of a semi at 90MPH. That time I broke 4 bones. Oops, I mean 5, forgot one! LOL
The main thing is getting the area to calm down and loosen up.
My nerve problem was right between my shoulder blades T-1, T-2 or so.
I could not lift my arms to drive to the MD's
The dock said during recovery, go easy on shoulder press, heavy shrugs, (my favorite!) and of course the mighty dead lift.
You'll be back, IMHO I'd take it easy on the singles for a while.
That Old Graybass
PS, Let us know how you're doing
