Ban on Stimulant Ephedra to Begin Monday
Sun Apr 11, 9:22 AM ET

WASHINGTON - A government ban on sales of ephedra kicks in Monday unless a federal judge issues the dwindling industry a late reprieve.

The herbal stimulant, once hugely popular for weight loss and bodybuilding, has been linked to 155 deaths and dozens more heart attacks and strokes.

After years of fighting manufacturers over ephedra's risks, the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) announced in December it would ban sales of the amphetamine-like herb — the first such ban of a dietary supplement — and urged consumers to quit using it immediately.

Research shows the herb can speed heart rate and constrict blood vessels even in seemingly healthy people, but it's particularly risky for those with heart disease or high blood pressure or who engage in strenuous exercise.

Ephedra sales already had plummeted because of publicity about the risks, which peaked after the ephedra-related death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler a year ago. Three states — New York, Illinois and California — have prohibited the stimulant on their own.

The nationwide ban was set to go into effect Monday.

Last month, however, the maker of the Stacker 2 ephedra brand filed a lawsuit seeking to block the ban. NVE Pharmaceuticals of New Jersey contends the FDA lacks proof that ephedra is dangerous if used as directed. The suit argues that the agency simply reacted to the emotion of high-profile deaths like Bechler's.

Medications must be proven safe and effective before they're allowed to be sold, but federal law allows dietary supplements to be sold without any such proof. To curb a dangerous supplement, the law requires the FDA to show it poses a significant health threat, which is a high standard to meet.

The FDA argued that it amassed sufficient proof of ephedra's dangers from thousands of side-effect reports and scientific studies that proved the herb's stimulant-like effects inside the body.

A federal judge was scheduled to rule Monday on the ephedra maker's request for a temporary restraining order.

Let it be known... the man-made version (Ephedrine HCL and Pseudoephedrine) will not be discontinued. So... Mini-Thins will still be legal.
If all forms of Ephedra were banned... then meds like Tylenol Sinus, Sudafed, Actifed and nasal sprays like 4way and Dristan would be illegal. The big name pharms would not abide by this.
And we all know the fed govt is npt going to piss off the big boys.

FDA's Position

Attached is the FDA's position and supporting evidence for their impending ban. My only Problem with this is that they study reviewed over 16,000 adverse events reported after ephedra use and found about 20 "sentinel events" including heart attack, stroke, and death that occurred in the absence of other contributing factors.. The risk of Cancer to smokers and second hand smokes inhalation is greater then that. Yet no ban on Cigarettes. It all boils down to the mighty dollar. Seriously, do you think the government really cares about the risk of using ephedra? I think they care about preserving the billion dollars "keep us fat" industry!

Banned
whats even more pathetic is that in turkey, one of the more 'liberal' countries regarding medicines, efedrine hcg 50mg tabs are to be discontinued late july.

this is a country where gear is legal to buy otc and to carry on airplanes!!!!

now.. i can tell you first hand that abuse of efedrine is very serious.
the sides can become quite devastating.

but in moderation, for example used pre workouts a few times a week, its safe and very effective as a pre workout boost.

its the idiot fuckin drug fucks who mix efedrine in their extacy pills that really give efedrine a bad name.

same story with ghb which was legal otc up until some idiots who cant get laid began using it to rape.

i can understand the tough position of the government and the super strict legislation... but remember that the govt is not to blamed for such bans.
